The Ontario Minister of Energy has unveiled the Electric Vehicle Charging Connections Process (EVCCP), a new initiative aimed at simplifying and expediting the installation of EV charging infrastructure for building owners and operators in the province. The EVCCP introduces four key changes:

  1. Preliminary Consultation Process: Building owners can request an Electric Vehicle Preliminary Consultation Information Request (EVPCIR) form from their local distribution company or hydro company. The company must respond within 15 days, providing information on grid capacity, installation complexity, and estimated costs. Additionally, a meeting with the Local Distribution Companies (LDC) can be arranged for more detailed discussions.

  1. New Flow Chart and Timeline: The EVCCP includes a new flow chart to enhance understanding of the EVSE (charging station) connection process, outlining responsibilities of each party and setting enforceable timelines for the LDC to respond to property owners. The aim is to offer property owners greater certainty in project planning and operational timelines.

  1. Clarity on System Expansion Costs: In cases where projects necessitate system upgrades, the LDC must furnish a detailed estimate specifying responsibilities for labor, materials, equipment, and other associated costs.

  1. Standardized Processes Across Ontario: Addressing the existing inconsistencies among the 58 LDCs in Ontario, the EVCCP seeks to standardize processes for electrical contractors and station owners. This standardization aims to eliminate ambiguity and streamline procedures across the province.
